Reflective writing

I really had mixed feelings about sculpture day, as I enjoyed part of it and others I didn't really.

I mostly enjoyed the morning session, which includes the usage of the items we brought in ourselves. I was able to have a good think about and experience how basic, everyday objects can be amplified and given meaning through arrangement, interaction, and incorporation of other medium. I was also proud of the work I did in these sessions as I was able to pull references from pieces I'd seen in real life and incorporate similar elements in my work to create the desired effect. The best part was definitely thinking about and experiencing interaction between me and the object by coming together collectively to create art pieces. Here I kind of treat myself as an object as well and accept the coexistence of us, and bring out the best of each other through composition. I was also able to have a bit of thinking about conceptual ideas like balance and the manipulation of it.

What I didn't really enjoy though, was the afternoon session, and I believe a lot of other people shared the same thoughts with me. We didn't really have time to research on the problems we chose, and we didn't really have time to construct the sculpture to our liking. The final product ended up way differently than how I planned in a sense that it's basically a simpler version, that doesn't even depict the desired meaning. In regards of the final piece, I obviously am not proud of it. I wish I had more time to at least complete it to the degree of how I intended it to be. Despite that, I did have a really informative crit session with Rat. If I were to do the piece again, I may experiment with adding feet as well to more clearly convey the two persons' relative positions. Looking at my piece, I can even try experimenting using only toes and fingers instead of the whole hand and foot. After some thought, the part of the hands and feet that convey the most are the fingers as they clearly show how tense a grip is. I may also omit the red splatters, as they did in fact look like blood and can easily be misinterpreted as a murder scene. I also experimented with plasticine and clay, and were able to see their differences. It was my first time using plasticine so it definitely was a challenge as it was a lot stiffer and harder to manipulate than clay, so I was able to work with it for the first time and realise it's features. So i guess there was some positive that came out in the afternoon session.
