Reflection: Doing acrylic pour on a larger canvas ( After drying )

After letting the painting dry for 3 days, I observed the results and it was similar to what I had expected. More separation between the colors, so the result is less smooth and there are less transitions between colors, making it less aesthetically pleasing. However, one thing that came to my surprise was that on the day I returned to check the piece, there was a piece of paper that fell from the wall in going into the painting. When I pulled the paper out, there were lumps and very unflat areas near the areas the paper touched the paint. So I guess, maybe make sure nothing falls on top of your acrylic pour by covering it. Also, the result in itself wasn't really smooth, unlike my first experimental piece. This may have been because I added too much acrylic to the piece, so that even though the canvas absorbs some of the paint, there were still some excess paint laying on top, causing slight bumps on the surface of the piece.

I quite liked the process and results nonetheless. The unpredictability of the paint was what captivated me the most. Even though there are certain results I can create by blowing the layers of paint in certain ways, there were still a lot of unknowns in how the paint moved and interacted with their counterparts. The unpredictability of the paint's movements actually made me a bit anxious and quite worried at times, because there were times where the results didn't necessarily come out as I intended. However, I learned to let go and let the paint do the work, because the beauty of these processes is letting the paint move and flow on its own, so in a way I'm releasing myself from control of the piece.

Conceptually, this also relates to my theme of body image and our appearances. Even though there are a lot we can control about our bodies, our bodies still contain a lot of unknowns and surprises that we can't necessarily predict and control. Like the artwork, we shouldn't focus and stress on the results, but instead appreciate bodies' natural changes and fluctuations because that's where the beauty of the human body lies. I also liked the act of blowing the paint outwards. When I drew the outline, I was trying to trace out what is typically considered an ideal figure, but by blowing and blurring the lines out, it felt as if I was destroying that unrealistic idealisation and showing that even bodies without the most perfect curves and lines can also be beautiful.
